Mike Friederich No-Hits the Lakeland Tigers

Osceola Astros 2 Lakeland Tigers 0

August 4, 1985

Osceola righthander Michael Friederich fired a no-hitter in the first game of a double-header as the Astros blanked Lakeland 2-0 Sunday in a Florida State League game at Osceola County Stadium.
Friederich (6 - 9), who was the third pick in the June 1983 draft, struck out seven and walked two. It was Friederich's third appearance since a knee injury sidelined him in July.
Friederich, who lowered his ERA to 3.61, needed only 82 pitches for his seven-inning no-hitter. He allowed only one runner to reach second base. The Astros mounted their only offensive threat in the sixth on the strength of a two-out, two run single by Tony Hampton. Jim O'Dell, who has reached base in 14 consecutive games, led off the sixth with a single. One out later, Mark Reynolds walked. A wild pitch by Lakeland starter Dave Minnema (7 - 11) moved the runners into scoring position.
After Minnema struck out Troy Afenir, Hampton delivered a two-run single up the middle for his first game-winning RBI.

Friederich would go on to win his last two starts of the year, including a 7-hitter in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Daytona Beach Islanders August 24 that would clinch the FSL Central crown for Osceola in their first year. This brought Friederich's record to 8 - 9 on the year, with a 3.29 ERA. He started and lost the first game of the playoff series against the Fort Lauderdale Yankees August 30.
The following year, Friederich got promoted to AA Columbus, and he posted an identical 8 - 9 record, but with a higher 4.35 earned run average. Friederich, who had been named by Baseball America in 1984 as one of their top 25 prospects, remained in the Astro organization in 1987, but did not pitch for some unspecified reason, and he was no longer with the Astros for 1988. As of December 2002, he was employed as a corrections officer by the State of Pennsylvania.
