Quintana Takes Lesson From Philley

Quintana Takes Lesson From Philley
on 'Slider'--And Hurls No-Hit Game

Durham Bulls 1 Raleigh Cardinals 0

July 16, 1965

by DICK BARKLEY

Juan Quintana, a lanky, 19-year old righthander who speaks very little English, is wishing now that he had been in sight for a few of Dave Philley's "sign signals" throughout his short baseball career.
Philley, manager of the [Carolina] league-leading Durham Bulls gave Quintana a few pointers yesterday afternoon concerning the art of pitching a "slider"--a curve which only bends sideways and not down.
Quintana, who reported to the Bulls just a few days ago, apparently is quite a student. He used the new pitch, along with a good fast ball and a dipping curve, to hurl a masterful no-hitter against Raleigh last night in his first start for the Durham team.

A walk and Doug Rader's triple in the seventh frame gave the Bulls a 1-0 triumph in the seven-inning opener of a double header at Raleigh. The Cardinals came back to post a 5 -1 decision in the second game, however.
Quintana, who fanned five and walked three, retired six Raleigh batters on grounders, five on infield popups, and five others on outfield flies.
His only anxious moment came in the final inning when Felix DeLeon lifted a fly to short center field. Durham's Joe Panella appeared to misjudge the drive at first, and then raced toward the infield to make a diving catch--holding onto the ball as he turned a complete flip. No other swing of the bat resulted in anything close to a hit.

It appears as if Quintana had actually been demoted from AA Amarillo when he reported to the Bulls several days before this game. He'd gone 3 - 3 in the Texas League, with a 4.21, numbers he'd virtually duplicate at Durham, where he went 2 - 3 with a 4.34. In 1966, his last year in the Astros organization, he'd start at Durham, where he'd actually pitch another no-hitter, this one for nine innings, then get demoted again to Salisbury. Still, Quintana remains one of only three pitchers in organizational history (with Don Wilson and Dean Hartgraves) to pitch more than one no-hitter. Quintana won 40 minor league games and closed out his career with Veracruz-Torreon of the Mexican League in 1970
